Two Kashmiri documentary filmmakers win awards at National Science Film Festival

Kolkata: Two Kashmir-based documentary filmmakers-Jalal Ud Din Baba and Abdul Rashid-have won special jury film awards and bronze beaver award for their sciences films on environment and climate change which were shot in Kashmir.

The awards were given at the 7th National Science Film Festival & Competition which was organised by Vigyan Prasar, an organisation under the Department of Science & Technology and National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Ministry of Culture at Kolkata from February 14th – 18th, 2017.

Jalal Ud Din Baba bagged special jury award for his documentary “Global Warming – Kashmir Chapter” while Abdul Rashid won bronze beaver award for his film “Don’t Burn Leaves”.

In his film “Global Warning – Kashmir Chapter” , Jalal presents how Kashmir is becoming prone to effects of global warming by well documenting the effect on ice-capped mountains and local practices contributing to environmental degradation.

Rashid documents how the local practice of burning leaves in almost all parts of Kashmir is leading to air pollution.

Both the documentary films were hailed as the best documentary film for their storyline, treatment and the narrative.

“When your films are appreciated as the benchmark of research, science communication and environment awareness tool, what else could be a big prize for us. we will continue to come up with more environmental films on Kashmir,” Jalal Ud Din Baba told TwoCircles.net.

The films were selected by a jury of eminent filmmakers, professors, scientist, media professionals like Prof. Partha S. Ghose, former Chairman of Satyajit Ray Film & TV Institute, Kolkata (Chairman National Jury), Reena Mohan, eminent filmmaker, award winning filmmakers,  Arun Chadha, Smriti Nevatia, Ranu Ghose and Anwar Jamal.
