Dalit tied to a tree, beaten up in Karnataka village

A Dalit man was tied to a tree and beaten up in a village in Vijayapura district on suspicion of helping out his son in fleeing with the daughter of a village resident.

The victim is 52-year-old farm worker named Mareppa Harijan who is resident of Haligondakanal village which falls under Sindgi taluk. Mareppa has filed a police complaint in which he has named Mehboobsab as the assaulter.

According to the Mareppa, Mehboobsab and his relatives were accusing him of helping out his 18-year-old son Ningappa in fleeing with Mehboobsab’s minor daughter. The couple has been missing since the last 20 days.

Mareppa told police that his son Ningappa left home about a month ago, but Mehboobsab’s daughter has been missing since one week.

Over the alleged assault, Mareppa has accused Mehboobsab and his son Allabaksha for beating up him and his other son Ramesh when he came to the rescue of his father.

According to the police, the accused  are booked under SC/ST act and Section 324 of Indian Penal Code. Several arrests in the case has been made but Police are yet to arrest Mehboobsab, the girl’s father, in the case.

The girl in the question is said to be minor, but it is yet to await confirmation. Police has also informed that girl side has not filed any complaint, which they could.

In past few weeks, Vijayanagar has seen several cases of clashes between Muslim and Dalits. On June 3, a pregnant Muslim women was allegedly burnt to death after running with and marrying a Dalit guy.
