Raghuram Rajan Committee and Islamic Banking in India

Though Raghuram Rajan Committee was silent about Islamic Banking in its draft report released on 7th April 2008, it has suggested Interest-free banking as a part of recommendations made for financial sector reforms. The term of ‘interest-free banking’ instead of ‘Islamic banking’ is needed to avoid any communal uproar before coming election. The next two paragraphs on interest-free banking have been inserted in final report as submitted to the Prime Minister on 12th September 2008.

Ranchi : The Hindu month of Shravan (mid-July to mid-August), considered auspicious by worshippers of Lord Shiva, brings cheers to marijuana sellers in Deoghar district of Jharkhand.
During this period, millions of devotees clad in saffron walk, at times barefoot, to pour water on the Shiva Linga at the Baidyanath temple in Deoghar, 350 km from here. Smoking ganja (marijuana) is popular among the pilgrims.
According to one estimate, devotees consume 20-25 kg of marijuana every day.
A bodyguard recalls his time with Netaji

New Delhi : As one of his personal bodyguards, Captain Shobharam Tokas would always follow Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose wherever he went, taking care to remain a few steps behind and never looked him straight in the eyes.
Till today, at the ripe old age of 89, Captain Tokas refuses to accept the 'death" of Netaji in a mystery plane crash over Taiwan on Aug 18, 1945.
"That is a big 'dhoka' (deception). There was no plane crash. Netaji did not die in a plane crash, but went to Manchuria and from there to Russia," Tokas told IANS here.

Guwahati : For the last two decades, Bhola Baba, a Hindu seer, has become much sought after at the revered Kamakhya temple in Assam during the Ambubachi Mela, a four-day festival that began Sunday, for his "miraculous powers".
Bhola Baba belongs to the secret Aghor cult, whose adherents meditate in graveyards at night. And ever since the Baba stepped into the temple of Mother Goddess Kamakhya three days ago, streams of people were queuing up for his blessings.
Gorakhpur University wants fake degree racket busted

Lucknow : Alarmed over the cases of fake graduation degrees and mark sheets in the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University, the varsity administration plans to seek police help to bust the racket, said an official Wednesday.
"We have decided to approach the police to bust the fake degree and certificate racket," Gorakhpur University Vice-Chancellor Namdeo Shriramji Gajbhiye told IANS on telephone.

"A medical representative (MR) Navneet was the brain behind the kidnapping of doctor K.M. Singh. Naveent took the help of four friends from his village and his mother Nirmala Devi and sister Rina alias Raj Rani," Senior Superintendent of Police Akhil Kumar said.

Delhi High Court to get crèche for lawyers’ tiny tots

New Delhi : The Delhi High Court will soon get a crèche for the day-care of women lawyers' and employees' children aged up to three years. Based on the experience gained, similar crèches will be set up in the four trial courts in different parts of the city.
"We have already issued a circular and communicated verbally to the bar members to provide the details of their children so that we can make necessary arrangements for starting the crèche," Delhi High Court Bar Association (HCBA) President K.C. Mittal told IANS.

Jammu : A Terrorism and Disruptive Activities (TADA) court here Monday acquitted seven men accused of kidnapping and killing the then Kashmir University Vice Chancellor Mushir-ul-Haq, his private secretary and Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) general manager H.L. Khera in 1990.

AFI president and Congress leader Umrao Singh passes away

New Delhi : Athletics Federation of India (AFI) president and veteran Congress leader Umrao Singh passed away in Jalandhar Sunday after a brief illness. He was 82 and is survived by his wife, a son and three daughters.
Umrao, a former Congress MP, was suffering from chest infection for the past few months. He was associated with the AFI for the past 50 years and also served as its president twice and was also a council member of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF).

Naik, who hailed from Jaguliapada, some 150 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, was the gardener tending the sprawling lawns of Birla House in New Delhi Jan 30, 1948, when Nathuram Godse fired bullets at Gandhi after a prayer meet.

Kochi : Ajay Malarkandi's phone hasn't stopped ringing since Wednesday morning. The advocate in Kerala studied law with US president-elect Barack Obama at Harvard and he just can't wait to meet his former classmate at the institute's reunion.
"I am yet to have lunch because I have been flooded with calls from several quarters because I and Obama belonged to the Class of 1991 at the Harvard Law School," Malarkandi told IANS.
He fondly recalled Obama as a "down-to-earth" person who had no airs.

"Kalima", the Arabic translation of the original works in Sanskrit, was done by Abdul Wahab Al Maqaleh, a professor of translation at the Faculty of Languages at Sanaa University, Yemen. The project was conducted by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH).

Toronto : Indo-Canadian Hargurdeep Saini was appointed vice president of the University of Toronto, Canada's biggest university, Thursday.
Prof Saini, who is currently the dean at the University of Waterloo in Hamilton near here, will also be the principal of the University of Toronto's Mississauga campus.
An alumnus of Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana, Saini joins many Indian-origin educationists holding high positions in Canadian universities.
IGNOU students to get train travel concession

New Delhi : On-campus students of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will get concessional fares for train travel anywhere in the country, Vice Chancellor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai announced Wednesday.
"The railway board has agreed to give train travel concession with immediate effect to face-to-face programmes students of varsity and this will place them on par with their counterparts of other central universities," said Pillai.
Pillai said the move will positively impact enrolment in the next admission beginning July 2010.
