The attack, thought to be carried out by a suicide car bomber, occurred at 7.20 a.m. at the entrance to the police academy in the town of Hangu, 90 km south-west of NWFP capital Peshawar, the Aaj TV channel reported.

Three civilians were among those killed in the bombing.

The attacker detonated the explosives when guards stopped him, as he tried to drive his vehicle into the academy where the recruits had just finished their morning drill, the channel said quoting sources.

The injured were taken to a hospital where authorities declared an emergency due to the high number of casualties. Doctors feared that the death toll may increase as many victims were in a serious condition.

Pakistan’s north-west region, which includes the semi-autonomous tribal areas bordering Afghanistan, is in the grip of violence since the military killed at least 75 militants holed up a radical mosque in the capital Islamabad earlier this month.

On the calls of extremists, revenge attacks have been carried out on military convoys and police facilities, killing over 100 people so far.
