India approves extradition pact with Iran

New Delhi : India Thursday approved the signing of an extradition treaty with Iran and another on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.

“The union cabinet today gave its approval for signing and ratification of an extradition treaty between India and Iran,” Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters here Thursday.

He was speaking after a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

“The treaty would provide a legal framework for seeking extradition of terrorists, economic offenders, and other criminals from and to Iran,” the minister added.

“The cabinet also gave its approval for signing an agreement between India and Iran on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.

“It will provide a broad legal framework for bilateral cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran in the investigation and prosecution of crime, tracing, restraining or forfeiting of the proceeds and instruments of crime,” Dasmunsi said.
