Uttar Pradesh reply sought on lawsuit against Mulayam Singh

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Supreme Court Thursday asked for the Uttar Pradesh government response to a lawsuit that alleged diversion of Rs.600 million worth of funds by former chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to a college run by his family members.

A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice P. Sathasivam sought the state government’s reply within four weeks to the petition that alleged diversion of the money from the Chief Minister’s Discretionary Fund in violation of norms.

Petitioner Narendra Nath Rai, a Lucknow native, alleged that Yadav during his tenure as the state’s chief minister last time had diverted Rs.600 million to a college in his village Saifai in Etawah district in Uttar Pradesh.

Rai alleged in his petition that the college was run by close family members of the former chief minister.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, during her previous stint in 2003, had got around 150 cases registered against Yadav all over the state for illegal diversion of money from the Chief Minister’s Discretionary Fund during his tenure between 1995 and 1996.

The Allahabad High Court, however, had stayed his prosecution.
