New Delhi : In light of the Mumbai terror mayhem, the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI), an international NGO, Friday called for urgent implementation of police reform in India to effectively address threats to national integrity.
“Fighting terrorism and other crime is not possible on the basis of a foundationally weak and compromised police service that is used as a private handmaiden rather than as a truly independent public service,” the CHRI said here in a press statement.
“We urge all the politicians in the aftermath of Mumbai to finally acknowledge that police reforms are too important to neglect and too urgent to delay,” it added. CHRI is an NGO with special consultative status with the UN economic and social council.
The statement was endorsed by Kiran Bedi, former director general of Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), H.K. Dua, editor-in-chief of The Tribune, Uday Bhaskar, defence analyst and many prominent citizens.
