Mumbai : Mumbai Police plan to file another charge sheet supplementing the one filed against 27 Indian Mujahideen (IM) activists, including six absconders, a top police official said late Tuesday.
Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Rakesh Maria said the investigations into the aspects of the funding of the terror operations, the source of the funds and the routes taken, are still being investigated.
“The police are in touch with some banks from where the funds were withdrawn or transferred and other similar financial details,” Maria told mediapersons.
Apart from the 27 accused including the absconders, police are investigating the possibility of the involvement of a few more people, including foreign nationals, he said.
He was interacting with the media shortly after Special Public Prosecutor Kalpana Chavan lodged the 1,800-plus-page charge sheet with Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) Special Judge Y.D. Shinde for a series of bombings across the country in the past three years, including in Bangalore, Ahmedabad and New Delhi last year.
The police have secured 13 confessional statements of the accused, which have not been attached to the charge sheet, according to Maria. The names of those who have confessed have not been revealed so far.
The police will present 102 witnesses in the case.
The police case will also focus on the involvement of all the accused in a majority of the terror attacks around the country since 2005, Maria added.
Noted criminal lawyer J.P. Mishra said the case will not proceed against all the 27 accused based on the charge sheet filed Tuesday.
“The prosecution can say that the charges have been filed even against the six accused who are absconding. If and when they are arrested, they will be charged under the same charge sheet without necessitating fresh investigations against them,” Mishra told IANS.
