Gandhi and Mulayam Singh met at the Congress president’s 10 Janpath residence here amid indications that the two parties apparently remained locked in hard bargaining over seat-sharing in India’s most populous state.

Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh said his party has offered 15 seats to the Congress in Uttar Pradesh.

He told reporters after the meeting that the party was still open to further talks with the Congress over the issue.

There was no word from the Congress, indicating that the parties were unable to hammer out a consensus.
