New Delhi : A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) official was crushed to death when a speeding Blueline bus hit his motorbike early Monday, police said.
Rajiv Sharma, an inspector with CISF, came under the wheels of the bus when it hit his motorbike from behind and threw him off the vehicle near the busy ITO crossing in central Delhi, close to the Delhi Police headquarters.
Sharma was on his way to his south Delhi office when the accident occurred. Sharma, in his mid-30s, received head injuries and died on the spot.
Police said the ‘killer’ bus had been impounded but the driver and conductor absconded.
“We have registered a case of negligence against the driver and a hunt is on to arrest him,” said a police official.
There are nearly 4,000 privately operated Blueline buses in the capital that form a crucial part of its public transport.
However, with little regard for passenger safety, speeding and untrained staff, many of them have been involved in fatal accidents and have earned the epithet “killer buses”.
These buses have already claimed 73 lives in the capital this year. Last year they were responsible for 100 deaths. A public uproar two months ago prompted the government to screen them for fitness. The state-run Delhi Transport Corp (DTC) buses too have been responsible for 27 deaths this year.
In a separate incident, three youths were killed when their motorbike smashed against a tree in Kanjhawala area of northwest Delhi late Sunday.
The victims – identified as Raman 22, Amit, 20, and Kallu, 23 – were rushed to a nearby hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.
According to the police, initial investigations suggest that the trio was drunk. They were returning to the city from a village in Haryana.
