32 percent polling in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow : The 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh that are going to the polls in the last phase Wednesday saw 32.29 percent voting until 1 p.m. after a slow start.

The highest voter turnout of 36 percent was in Pilibhit constituency where Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Varun Gandhi is contesting. The lowest of 29.6 percent was recorded in Aonla where his mother Maneka Gandhi is the party nominee, an official said.

The constituencies going to the polls Wednesday are Rampur, Pilibhit, Budaun, Moradabad, Dharhaura, Bijnore, Bareilly, Aonla, Shahjahanpur, Kheri, Sambhal, Amroha, Nagina and Saharanpur.

About 19.5 million people are eligible to vote Wednesday. Apart from Maneka and Varun Gandhi, they include Jaya Prada (Samajwadi Party) and former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin (Congress).

Polling began at 7 a.m. after a routine mock poll by officials at all the 20,807 polling stations, said deputy state election officer Atiq Ahmed.

As many as 203 candidates, including 15 women, are in the fray in the fifth and final round of voting in Uttar Pradesh. The state elects 80 members to the Lok Sabha.

Balloting in the other seats took place between April 16 and May 7.
