India, Japan to enhance defense cooperation

NEW DELHI, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — Indian Defense Minister Shri Antony and his Japanese counterpart Yuriko Koike reaffirmed their commitment to further enhance bilateral defense cooperation during their meeting here on Friday.

According to the press release of the Indian government, the two ministers have also expressed happiness on the enhanced defense cooperation between India and Japan in the recent years.

During their meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further enhance this cooperation in various fields like maritime security, research and development and exchange of information on technology aspects.

Japan, whose forces will take part in a multi-nation naval exercise to be hosted by India next month, has announced that its military personnel would for the first time attend defense courses in India.

Accordingly the first batch of the Japanese officers would be joining the prestigious Indian National Defense College soon.

On Thursday, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe just concluded his three-day visit to India. During his visit to India, the two sides announced the roadmap for new dimensions to the strategic and global partnership between the two countries, in an aim to further strengthen political, security and defense cooperation.
