Vidya Chaudhari, women and welfare minister of Uttar Pradesh state adjoining Nepal, was detained by Nepal police for three hours Saturday evening after her car crossed into Nepal.

The minister, accompanied by her two children and three bodyguards, had crossed into Kapilavastu district of Nepal across the border.

While heading towards the busy marketplace at Chandrauta town, the car was stopped by Nepal police as Chaudhari’s bodyguards were carrying arms but had not informed the Nepal authorities.

The Indian minister told police it was a mistake and they had not intended to cross into Nepal.

The group was allowed to return late evening after cooling their heels in police custody for three hours.
