Islamabad: The US has pledged an additional $11.1 million in humanitarian assistance to Pakistan, the American embassy said Saturday.
US special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke said the aid would be given for people affected by the conflict in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (formerly the North West Frontier Province) and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan, Xinhua reported.
The official announcement came shortly after Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told the visiting US envoy that the anti-terror war could be badly affected if the international community failed to deliver their pledges to help Pakistan undertake projects in the affected areas of the country.
Of the total pledge, $4 million will be directed through the World Health Organisation for provision of life-saving health services while $4.1 million of the aid will go to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for camp coordination and camp management, the US embassy said.
The US has contributed $173.9 million in humanitarian assistance to Pakistan so far in fiscal 2010-11 that ends June 30, it said.
