Rahul Gandhi’s Amethi constituency made district

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Thursday declared Amethi – the parliamentary constituency of Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi – the state’s 72nd district and renamed it after her Bahujan Samaj Party’s Dalit icon, Chattrapati Shahuji Maharaj.

A government spokesman told reporters that the decision to declare Amethi a district and rename it was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet here.

In 2003, during her third stint in power, Mayawati had made a similar announcement at a public rally in Amethi, but her government lost power before it could implement it and her successor, Mulayam Singh Yadav, dropped the idea.

After she came back to power in 2007, the issue did not appear to be on her list of priorities in the first three years of her reign.

BSP leaders asserted that their party was committed to the development of the area.

“The Congress has been busy criticising the BSP on different counts. But now you can see that the Mayawati government is capable of doing what the Gandhis did not do in decades for the development of Amethi,” BSP state chief Swami Prasad Maurya said.
