Poll panel censures TRS MP Vijayashanti

Hyderabad : The Election Commission has censured Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) MP Vijayashanti and Congress legislator T. Jayaprakash Reddy for making provocative statements in violation of the election code of conduct, an official said Friday.

Andhra Pradesh’s chief electoral officer I.V. Subba Rao told reporters that the EC took serious note of the violation of the poll code that is in operation in Telangana region for July 27 by-elections to 12 assembly seats.

The poll panel found that both the leaders violated the code by making inflammatory remarks. “The Election Commission felt that as responsible leaders, they should not have made such provocative remarks,” he said.

Subba Rao said police cases against both the MP and the state legislator would take their natural course.

Police arrested Vijayashanti and Jayaprakash Reddy July 3 for making inflammatory speeches. They were later released on bail.

In her reply to the EC notice last week, actress-turned-politician Vijayashanti had denied making remarks but the poll panel after perusing relevant video footage found that she violated the poll code.

Addressing TRS workers here, Vijayashanti had asked Telangana supporters to slay the enemies of Telangana if they create hurdles in the formation of a separate state.
