Government to better information machinery in northeast

Guwahati: In a move to better the information machinery in the militancy-riven and far-flung areas in India’s northeast, the information and broadcasting ministry Monday opened a two-day all India editors’ conference on social and infrastructure issues here.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said the government’s communication strategy was aimed to provide “quality information by enhancing the outreach of its campaigns through cost effective tools, formats and delivery mechanisms”.

She said information ministers of the northeast states would meet with the media units of the ministry here Tuesday to enable the central government “outline the road map for more effective communication platforms in future”.

She said in the last couple of months while huge investments had been made in the social sector by the government, it was imperative for the ministry to spread awareness through innovative communication methods.

The government is planning to extend the coverage of state-run TV Doordarshan and All India Radio and also promote private FM channels in the region.
