Chandigarh to launch air-conditioned buses for disabled

By IANS,

Chandigarh : Keeping in mind the needs of the disabled and elderly people, the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) will launch a fleet of specially designed air-conditioned buses in the city next week.

According to officials, these buses will have unique features like an inbuilt ramp which can be opened by the driver to help disabled and elderly passengers board the bus.

“These 32-seater air-conditioned buses are designed after keeping in mind the special requirements of handicapped and aged people. They are fitted with many user-friendly features and have more space for the passengers as compared to other local buses,” M.L. Sharma, director of transport, Chandigarh, told IANS Sunday.

“Initially, we will introduce 10 such buses which will be red in colour. Based upon the response, we will increase their number in the coming months,” stated Sharma.

These buses will ply only within the city and charge a fare of Rs.10 for the first five kilometres and Rs.15 for a journey above five kilometres.

Few months back, the CTU launched a fleet of air-conditioned buses on the local routes.

Talking about the features of these new buses, a CTU official said: “These buses have extra space to keep the wheel-chairs of the passengers inside and door sensors have been installed in them. A bus driver can also tilt the bus to help passengers board the bus.”
