CBI seeks transfer of Sohrabuddin case out of Gujarat

By IANS,

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Friday asked the Supreme Court to transfer the trial in Sohrabuddin Sheikh-Kausarbi killings case outside Gujarat.

The investigating agency, which was asked to investigate the fake encounter case by the apex court, also prayed for the transfer of the accused outside the state to Mumbai.

The CBI submitted it report to the Supreme Court’s registry and its plea is likely to come up for hearing next week.

The investigating agency has sought three months more time to carry out its investigation.

The CBI may also seek court’s nod to investigate the Tulsiram Prajapati case. Prajapati, who was an associate of Sohrabuddin, was also killed in a gunfight, said to be staged.

A bench of Justice Tarun Chatterjee and Justice Aftab Alam Jan 12 this year ordered the CBI probe in Sohrabuddin case on a petition by his brother, Robabuddin Sheikh.

Sohrabuddin was killed in a “gunfight” in 2005. Later, his wife too was killed and cremated.

The investigation by the CBI rocked the political establishment in Gandhinagar and attained political colours after Gujarat’s then minister of state for home Amit Shah was named in the charge sheet of the case. Shah, who later resigned, is presently under judicial custody.
