A study carried out among 106 leading academics showed Brown was rated tenth of the 12 premiers in office since 1945.

The Sun reported Tuesday that only Sir Anthony Eden and Sir Alec Douglas-Home came behind Brown.

Brown, who was prime minister for less than three years, scored a dismal 3.9 out of 10.

Labour’s post-war prime minister Clement Attlee topped the poll with a score of 8.1 while Margaret Thatcher stood second with a score of 6.9. She was closely followed by Tony Blair who polled 6.4.

The survey of experts in politics and history was led by Kevin Theakston, a professor at University of Leeds.
