Ramadan begins in Kashmir

Srinagar: The Muslim holy month of Ramadan began here with the sighting of the moon on Wednesday.

The moon sighting committee comprising religious scholars announced that the Ramzan moon was sighted in some towns. Sirens blared from mosques across Jammu and Kashmir as Muslims began preparations for the fasting month.

The holy month of Ramadan, this marks a 30-day period of fasting.

People were seen greeting each other on the beginning of the holy month. Taraveeh (special Ramzan prayers) began at the mosques.

Women were seen preparing special dishes for “sahri”. The first fast of Holy month Ramadan will be observed on Thursday 12 August.

Saudi Arabia Television broadcasts the Taraveeh prayers live from Makkah, Saudi Arabia with simultaneous subtitling of the English translation.

In Saudi Arabia, Indonesia,Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar -Ramadan starts on Wednesday while in Indian and Pakistan it will be observed from August 12, 2010.
