CID probe ordered into Mamata convoy mishap

By IANS,

Kolkata : The West Bengal government Wednesday ordered a probe by the state police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into how a truck strayed into Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee’s convoy Monday and hit one of the cars.

Announcing this, state Home Secretary Samar Ghosh told mediapersons that the CID will look into complaints made in relation to the incident that occurred on Kolaghat bridge of East Midnapore district when Banerjee was returning to the city after her Lalgarh rally.

Banerjee’s close aide Ratan Mukherjee had Tuesday described the incident as an attempt on the leader’s life, saying the government should investigate the security lapse that led to the truck breaking into the convoy.

The driver of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) vehicle that was hit by the truck was injured.

Banerjee, also Trinamool Congress chief, complained of chest and neck pain and breathlessness after the incident and has been advised complete bed rest.

The home secretary had Tuesday quoted a preliminary report from the district administration that said it was a “mere accident”.
