New Delhi: Nominated Member of Rajya Sabha and famous lyricist, Javed Akhtar earns more than any other Muslim Member of the Upper House of Indian Parliament. According to the Register of Rajya Sabha Members’ Interest declarations, Akhtar has highest annual income of more than Rs 5 crore among Muslim Members. The lion’s share comes from his professional engagement as film script and lyrics writer. He earns Rs 3 crore from that source.
Besides, he gets Rs 1.8 lakh annually from JetAirways India Ltd where he is one of the directors. Moreover, he owns 80% share of Rizia Films which produces audio albums.
However, Sabir Ali, Rajya Sabha Member from Bihar, is the wealthiest among Muslim Members with assets worth Rs 13 crore. Sabir, who was Member on Lok Janshakti Party ticket, last week turned coat and joined Bihar’s ruling Janata Dal United of Nitish Kumar.
The Register of Rajya Sabha Members’ Interest Declarations has five heads: Pecuniary Interests; Remunerative Directorship; Regular Remunerated Activity, Shareholding of Controlling Nature; Paid Consultancy; and Professional Engagement.
Out of 24 Muslim Members of Rajya Sabha, 17 have given no information on these heads.
