According to Victor Ordinola, the national highway safety chief of the country, the accident occurred Thursday in the jungle province of Amazonas, when the bus bound for Lima fell into the San Antonio River.

Earlier this month, another vehicle crashed north of Lima in Ancash province, leaving 15 dead and 10 injured.

The police said the number of accidents in the country has been on the rise as transport firms flout rules and employ unskilled drivers on long-distance routes.

Poor condition of fleet, illegal conversion of trucks into buses, narrow and poorly constructed roads, especially in jungle or mountain areas, and lack of inspection by the transportation authorities are also responsible for the increasing number of fatal road accidents in the country, the police said.
