Marca claims that Jose Manuel Llaneza, general manager of Villarreal, has reached an agreement in Buenos Aires with Boca Vice-President Pedro Pompilio, though details of the deal are yet to be made public.

The only last-minute hitch could be the insistence of Riquelme to continue earning a salary as high as at Villarreal.

The majestic but hard-to-handle Riquelme has not played for Villarreal since January, when he fell out with coach Manuel Pellegrini.

From February to August he was loaned out to Boca, whom he guided to triumph in the Copa Libertadores, the South American club championship.

Since August, he has been kicking his heels at Villarreal, without having been registered for either the Spanish Liga or the UEFA Cup.

On Saturday, Riquelme starred in Argentina’s 3-0 thrashing of Bolivia in a World Cup qualifier.
