London, Nov 28, IRNA ,Britain’s recently-established Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board (Minab) is launching Thursday a wide- ranging consultation process with key stakeholders across the country on its proposed constitution.

Minab, a community-led initiative, was founded by an alliance of leading Muslim organizations, to build on the examples of good practice, governance and transparency of management at the UK’s 1,500 mosques.

“This will be a historic day for the Muslim communities in the UK as it not only marks the beginning of public consultation on the proposed constitution but is also the start of consultations on the first ever draft standards,” a steering group spokesman said.

The spokesman insisted that Minab will “enable its members to regulate themselves and to raise their standards of performance to the highest level.”
Apart from spreading good practice in the governance at mosques, its aim is also to assist educational institutions and centres for training of Imams and religious scholars.

The initiative followed the recognition of a need by the Muslim community to develop places of worship and learning also as centres of excellence of good governance and community cohesion, involving all sections of the community especially women and youth.

The four founding members are the Al-Khoei Foundation, the British Muslim Forum, the Muslim Association of Britain and the Muslim Council of Britain.

Thursday’s launch in London is expected to be attended by Minister for Communities and Local Government, Hazel Blears and representatives from two the opposition Conservative and Liberal Democratic parties.
