WFP to feed 2.2 million Bangladesh cyclone victims

Dhaka : The World Food Program (WFP) Sunday said it is launching a $52 million programme to feed 2.2 million people affected by the cyclone in Bangladesh for over six months.

WFP representative in Bangladesh Douglas Broderick conveyed WFP’s humanitarian programme to Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury of the caretaker government during a meeting here Sunday.

“An appeal for the amount has been made by the WFP and the response is satisfactory,” he was quoted by private news agency UNB.

Agriculture Adviser C.S. Karim Saturday said the government would require at least 1 million tonnes of rice, while 2 million tonnes of wheat should be imported to meet the country’s food shortfall.

The cyclone Sidr, one of the fiercest cyclones to hit Bangladesh in the last 131 years, slammed the country’s southern and southwest areas Nov 15, affecting 30 out of total 64 districts and leaving thousands dead and millions homeless.
