Mamata to lead rally in Delhi against Nandigram violence

Kolkata : Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee Monday said she would take out a rally in New Delhi Dec 5 in protest against the recent violence in Nandigram.

Earlier in the day, Mamata visited the trouble-torn district for the first time since the “recapture” of Nandigram by CPI-M supporters last month.

Her visit came a day after West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi toured the worst affected areas Sunday.

“Many people are still missing in Nandigram. Nobody knows where they have gone. There’s no information with the police whether they were murdered,” Mamata Banerjee said at a public gathering at the Nandigram College ground.

She also read out the names of villagers who went missing after CPI-M cadres carried out attacks in many areas of East Midnapore district like Gokulnagar, Sonachura, Garchakraberia.

“In protest against Nandigram violence, Trinamool Congress would bring out a rally in Delhi Dec 5 and also hold a meeting at Midnapore town Dec 20,” she said, adding many villagers who protested against the proposed land acquisition for the chemical hub in Nandigram are still living in fear in several relief camps.

Her visit comes barely weeks after the state government urged the central government to deploy CRPF in the violence-hit areas to restore law and order situation there.

Mamata last attempted to enter Nandigram Oct 28 but failed as CPI-M supporters allegedly fired at her convoy.
