New Delhi : Senior advocate Ranjit Kumar is set to replace K.T.S. Tulsi and defend the Gujarat government in the Supreme Court in the case related to the November 2005 staged killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kausar Bi.

In legal circles, senior counsel Kumar has earned the nickname of Delhi’s “demolition man” as he heads the apex court-appointed monitoring committee to assist the court in the matter related to the closure of business premises operating out of residential complexes in the city.

Kumar would be replacing senior counsel Tulsi, who has been representing the Gujarat state government in the Sohrabuddin case but has resigned in the wake of Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s controversial statement on the case at an election rally.

Kumar told IANS, “It is not a question of replacing Tulsi. I, in fact, have been representing the state government in three other cases related to staged killings. I will now be representing in Sohrabuddin’s matter as well.”

Kumar, in fact, appeared before the bench headed by Justice Tarun Chatterjee Friday when Dushyant Dave, counsel for Sohrabuddin’s brother Rubabuddin, sought early hearing of his petition for Narendra Modi’s prosecution for his role in the staged killings.

After Modi justified Sohrabuddin’s killing early this week at an election rally at Mangraul in south Gujarat, Rubabuddin along with Bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar Friday approached the apex court accusing the chief minister of plotting the extra-judicial killings.

The two have demanded a deeper probe into the matter by the Central Bureau of Investigation and Modi’s prosecution.
