The incident took place as undertrial Mohammad Salim, who was arrested by the General Railway Police (GRP), got into a scuffle with another undertrial Jhantu Kar in the hospital’s bathroom.

Jhantu, who sustained a deep gash on his head, succumbed to his injuries at the ICU of the same hospital.

The Howrah district police have suspended two officials, including a police constable, on charges of dereliction of duty.

“We have suspended Dhananjoy Rajak, a constable at Howrah police station and Shibnath Kundu of Natural Volunteer Force (NVF),” Howrah District Police Superintendent N.K Singh said.

Jhantu was admitted to the hospital Nov 28 by police after sustaining serious injuries while preparing crude bombs at his residence.

Salim, who was arrested in a theft case, was taken to the hospital Saturday night. He was stated to be mentally unstable.

“We would also file a case against the hospital authorities for keeping a mentally deranged prisoner with others in a general ward. They should have made separate arrangements for Salim,” Singh said.
