Lucknow: Three policemen have been suspended for being part of a nikah ceremony of a minor girl.
The case involves a 13 year old girl Rubina, whose nikah was performed to Sajid as a ‘punishment.’ Boy of her family eloped with a girl from the same village. Community panchayat penalised the eloped boy’s family by ruling that a girl of that family be married off to a boy of the eloped girl’s family.
The nikah ceremony was performed in Thana Bhawan town of Muzaffarnagar district. Policemen present there did not stop the marriage which is illegal for a minor in India. Inder Singh, a sub-inspector along with two other policemen have been suspended.
Panchayat that passed this judgement was held on December 4th and nikah was performed on December 9th.
A Senior Superintendent of Police is investigating the case.
