Quartet members urged to stop Israel”s resettlement policy

CAIRO, Dec 19 (KUNA) — Secretary-General of the Arab League Amr Moussa held here on Monday consultations with Arab foreign ministers to confront the Israeli government’s declaration of its intention to build 307 settlements near the occupied East Jerusalem.
The Arab League said in a press statement that Moussa also sent letters to members of the international Quartet, (the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the United States, Russia and Secretary General of the United Nations, the High Representative for foreign and security policy with the European Union) on the same subject.

The statement pointed out that Moussa said in his letters to the Quartet members that the Israeli decision was a flagrant violation of the commitments stated in the Annapolis conference, as well as violating international law, which considered the West Bank, including East Jerusalem as an occupied territory.

He said that the Israeli flagrant breach destroys the required atmosphere of confidence prior to the resumption of the final status negotiations beginning on December 12, adding such breach also raises doubts about the real intentions of Israel and its commitment to what came in Annapolis on the implementation of the road map, which provides a complete cessation of settlement.
He also asked the United States – which called for the Annapolis conference, as well as the Quartet – which is following developments of the situation in the Middle East – and the United Nations to take a firm stand to stop this grave breaches of the rescue efforts to revive the peace process launched by the Annapolis, which are threatened to stop.
