Shimla : India’s first polling booth set up exclusively for lepers recorded 100 percent turnout in Himachal Pradesh’s Kasauli constituency Wednesday.

Doctors looking after them at a nearby leper home were deputed by the Election Commission to conduct the polling near the resort town of Kasauli, some 85 km from here.

“All 13 eligible leper voters cast their votes within the first hour of voting,” said Vijay Singh, a doctor and in-charge of the centre. The 13 included two blind men.

“I am delighted to vote for the first time in my life. I thank the Election Commission for this gesture,” said Vir Singh, a leper voter who claimed to be over 90 years old.
