New Delhi: Among the names proposed for Bharat Ratna award this year, a new name of Shaikhul Hind Maulana Mahmoodul Hasan is added.
Haji Riyaz Mahmood a descendent of Maulana has proposed his name, he has support from Deobandis.
Addressing a press conference, Deoband’s chairman Maulana Haseeb Siddiqi said although his is a big name but even otherwise our governments have done nothing for the Maulana. He said that it was Shaikhul Hind who conferred the title of ‘Mahatma’ to Gandhi Ji in 1920.
Shedding light on war of independence, Riyaz Mahmood said the ‘Reshmi Roomal’ movement started by Shaikhul Hind was biggest armed struggle against English rule for getting the country freed. Maulana Mahmoodul Hasan also has the pride of initiating Gandhi Ji in the field of politics and this historical fact can not be denied that the expenses of first all India train journey undertaken by Gandhi Ji were borne by Maulana Mahmoodul Hasan himself.
Maulana along with four others were arrested by the British forces and imprisoned in Malta from 1916 to 1920.
