UAE, Nepal discuss cooperation on labour issues

Abu Dhabi, Jan 25 (IANS) The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has said it is keen to boost cooperation and coordination with Nepal and realising the benefits of the Abu Dhabi Declaration on ensuring labour rights, WAM news agency reported Friday.

UAE Minister of Labour Ali Abdullah Al-Kaabi and his Nepalese counterpart Ramesh Lekhak met Thursday on the sidelines of the Gulf Forum on Temporary Contractual Labor conference here.

The forum’s meeting concluded here Thursday.

Al-Kaabi stressed his government’s keenness on maximizing the benefits of the Abu Dhabi Declaration, which was adopted Jan 22 at the end of the two-day consultations by ministers from 20 countries of labour origin and destination.

The declaration proposed an action plan for the welfare of Asian workers that included measures to prevent illegal recruitment practices.

The declaration recognizes the joint responsibility of countries of origin and destination to work to prevent illegal recruitment practices and to promote transparent recruitment and employment policies to ensure the wellbeing, welfare and protection of temporary labour workers.

Lekhak described his meeting with Al-Kaabi as “historic” and praised UAE for its efforts to safeguard the rights of expatriate workers.
