Jammu : Jammu and Kashmir will have its first cancer hospital, to be constructed at a cost of Rs.25 billion, functioning by May this year.

The 700-bed hospital is being built at Katra, which lies at the base of the hill shrine of Vaishno Devi. Katra is 45 km north of the state’s winter capital, Jammu.

The first phase of the hospital costing Rs.1 billion will be completed by May this year.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board is constructing this state-of-the-art hospital.

Governor S.K. Sinha, who is also chairman of the shrine board, said in the first phase the hospital would have 200 beds, while 500 beds would be added in the second phase.

“Initially, a cancer hospital of 200 beds with facilities for comprehensive multi-speciality care, with special emphasis on preventive oncology and hospice care will be built,” Sinha said.

“This facility will be developed into a high tech institute of medical excellence of 700 beds offering all other super-speciality care,” the governor said.
