German gov’t deeply saddened over deadly apartment fire

Berlin : German government spokesman Thomas Steg here Tuesday voiced deep ‘regret’ over the tragic apartment fire in the southwest German city of Ludwigshafen which killed at least nine people and injured 60.

Talking to the press, Steg labeled the Ludwigshafen fire a ‘tragedy’ while offering his sympathies with families of the victims, among them many Turkish nationals.

According to an Interior Ministry spokeswoman, a special commission has been formed to help with the investigation.

The German government has also indicated its readiness to send BKA federal crime investigators, should such a request be made by the city of Ludwigshafen which is in charge of the investigation.

Germany has also agreed to allow Turkish fire experts to assist in the probe.

At least nine Turkish citizens were killed in the apartment fire, Berlin-based Turkish journalists told IRNA.
