Napolitano officially signed the order of dissolution after receiving caretaker prime minister Romano Prodi, and the move comes after the senate speaker failed to form an interim government that would oversee the amendment of the election law.

The president expressed his dismay over having to dissolve the parliament and call for an election without making the necessary reforms.

He called on political powers to bear their responsibility, to hold campaigns in a relaxed political atmosphere and to push for constitutional reform.

The political crisis comes after the resignation of the central-left government, led by Prodi, on January 25.
