Referring to a question put to him by the electronic media while leaving the Parliament House whether he would accept the offer to be India’s next president, Chatterjee replied: “For every Indian it will be a matter of honour to be the first servant of the country.”

“It is very unfortunate that only the very last portion of the observation by the speaker has been picked up by a section of electronic media to give a somewhat misleading impression to the people that the speaker is endeavouring to be the candidate for the post of the president,” said a statement issued by the speaker’s office.

“No leader of any party has ever spoken to him (Chatterjee) about the matter nor has he spoken to anybody.”

Chatterjee’s office further clarified that the office of the president should not be a matter of media speculation.
