Syria signs agreements with UNICEF on aid and health of Iraqi children in Syria

Damascus : Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Fayssal al-Mikdad has held discussions with UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa Sigrid Kaag on cooperation between Syria and the United Nations Children’s Fund.

Two agreements were signed during the meeting Sunday, one of them on providing aid to Iraqi children being taught in Syrian public schools, and the other on improving the health of Iraqi women and children in Syria.

The agreements are a part of the UNICEF’s support of Syria’s efforts to provide education and healthcare to children of Iraqi refugees in Syria.

Kaag also discussed with Chairman of the State Planning Commission Taisir al-Radaw means to bolster cooperation, in addition to the issue of children leaving schools and means to handle it by limiting child labour and early marriage.

Both sides discussed means to improve healthcare and education for children, the 2008 work plan, and the 7th Regional Cooperation Programme with UNICEF for 2007-2011.

Al-Radawi expressed Syria’s appreciation of the UNICEF’s role in supporting social development, particularly in matters related to children, pointing out that the cooperation programme with the UNICEF corresponds with the 10th five-year plan for economic development.

For her part, Kaag pointed out to the bilateral cooperation between the organisation and Syria, saying that UNICEF aims to open an office in the eastern region of Syria to follow up healthcare and education affairs of children there.
