Ranchi : The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) has called a 24-hour state-wide strike Thursday against the killing of seven of its cadres in Jharkhand last week.

Seven CPI-Maoist cadres were killed Feb 14 in a joint operation by the police and members of the village defence committee near Jamshedpur.

Jharkhand authorities have taken the call seriously. Director General of Police V.D. Ram has directed district police heads to be alert especially after the Maoist attacks on police posts in Orissa’s Nayagarh district, killing 13 policemen.

“Security of police stations and other important places has been beefed up,” said R.K. Mallik, spokesperson of Jharkhand Police.

Maoist rebels are active in 18 of the 24 districts in the state. Nearly 1,000 people have been killed by Maoists in the last seven years.
