Singh made a surprise visit Monday to a government-run relief camp in Dantewada district where he met several villagers including special police officer Bheema, the 25-year-old former Maoist commander.

Jagargunda camp is the only one of 23 government-run relief camps in the state’s southern region where food supplies are transported by helicopter because the rebels have destroyed the access road by exploding landmines.

The chief minister met Bheema and offered him a constable’s job after he confessed he fired at a helicopter some years back when Singh visited Dantewada district, an official statement late Monday said.

Officials say the failed attack took place three years ago.

“The chief minister was impressed by the candid confession … and when he was informed by officials about Bheema’s satisfactory performance as an SPO, he appointed him as a police constable,” the statement read.

Chhattisgarh has appointed about 4,500 youths as SPOs in Maoist-hit areas of Bastar region on a monthly pay of Rs.1,500 to assist the police in dismantling the rebel network.

Singh’s Jagargunda trip was part of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government’s 10-day annual village contact drive that began Monday. He announced that Rs.360 million would be sanctioned for two cement road construction projects to connect Jagargunda to the main road.
