Giving away the annual corporate awards of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Nath said the world has not given adequate attention to environmental crises, especially climate change, because the price of oil was not as high as it is now.

“Now, on top of these environmental crises, the world is faced with a food crisis as never before. Prices are doubling and the poorest countries are the ones suffering the most.

“The situation brings to the fore the urgent need for food and fuel security,” Nath said. “Governments cannot handle this alone. Society at large has to do it, and corporate sector has a great role to play.”

The TERI corporate award for environmental excellence was won by Numaligarh Refineries, with the second prize being shared by Hero Honda and Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers.

The award for corporate social responsibility was won by ITC, with the second prize going to Cairn India.

The award for Business Response to HIV/AIDS was won jointly by Tata Steel and Ballarpur Industries.
