“We are formulating a policy on renewable energy in the state. It will take some time and we hope to complete it by the current year,” West Bengal Green Energy Development Corporation Limited (WBGEDCL) managing director S.P. Gon Chaudhuri told reporters on the sidelines of a programme late Wednesday evening.

He said WBGEDCL is also giving assistance to other states like Mizoram and union territory Andaman and Nicobar Islands in preparing similar policies.

“We have (also) received a letter from the Tripura government, who have asked for our assistance in this regard. We would act as a consultant for the project of preparing a renewable energy policy in Mizoram and other states,” said Gon Chaudhuri.

He said: “West Bengal is taking help from the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM), Kolkata to prepare the guidelines. The policy would facilitate individuals, independent power producers (IPP), building developers and municipal corporations to switch over to a low-carbon economy.”

He said a tariff policy on the use of renewable energy has already been formed in West Bengal.

“We will place the policy before the state cabinet for approval. It’s very important to promote non-carbon emitting energy in West Bengal especially when we are observing occasions like the World Environment Day and other awareness generating programmes,” said Gon Chaudhuri.
