Suicide bomber attacks foreign military convoy in S Afghanistan

By Xinhua,

Kabul : A suicide blast targeted a patrol convoy of foreign military in Zabul province of southern Afghanistan occurred on Thursday morning, causing no casualties to the force but leaving four civilians nearby wounded, a police official said.

The bomber blew himself up while approaching the convoy of military vehicles on foot in Qalat, provincial capital of Zabul, Faridullah Khan, deputy provincial police chief, told Xinhua.

No one so far has claimed responsibility for the blast but the Taliban, fighting Afghan government and Afghan-based international forces since being ousted from power in 2001, has vowed to use more such deadly blast attacks this year.

As many as over 140 suicide blasts were recorded across Afghanistan last year, a bloodiest one since 2001.

Bombing attacks on foreign force patrolling with armored and bullet-proof vehicles often cause little harm to the troops but easily hurt civilian passers-by.

The past one or two weeks saw a nearly daily suicide bombing or roadside blast in Afghanistan where the insurgency-related conflicts and violence left 8,000 dead in 2007.

On Wednesday, a suicide bomber driving a car exploded himself near a foreign military patrol convoy in neighboring Kandahar province, leaving one child dead and the convoy unharmed.
