One soldier was killed and 18 were wounded along with two Iraqi contractors, when one bomb exploded near a small patrol base close to executed president Saddam Hussein`s hometown of Tikrit on Sunday, the military said.

The second soldier died when his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in east Baghdad at 9:45 am (0645 GMT) on Saturday, it added.

The deaths brought to 4,093 the US military`s losses in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion, according to an AFP tally based on independent website www.icasualties.org.

The US military said last month that the overall level of violence across Iraq had hit a four-year low, with just 19 US troops killed in May undercutting the previous lowest monthly death toll of 20 recorded in February 2004.
