Turkish president strongly condemns Istanbul twin explosions

Ankara : Turkish President Abdullah Gul Sunday strongly condemned the Istanbul twin explosions which killed 14 people and wounded about 140 others.

Gul made this condemnation soon after the twin explosions which occurred in a busy shopping area in the Gungoren district in Turkish largest city of Istanbul late Sunday.

Istanbul Governor Muammer Guler called the two blasts “an act of terror,” saying that “it is certain that this is a terror attack.”

Turkish private NTV quoted Guler as saying that bombs were placed in garbage cans and exploded in the busy shopping area where a lot of people were walking at the summer weekend.

The NTV showed ambulances were carrying seriously wounded people to hospitals nearby after the explosions at two different sites.

The victims were killed by the second explosion after a small explosion in a telephone booth brought people out to the street, the report added.

The injured including 15 in serious conditions, whom were sent to hospitals nearby for medical treatment.
