Please don’t take Deoband row to road or media: Mushawarat

By TCN News,

New Delhi: All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat has urged restraint on the part of all stakeholders of the ongoing Deoband dispute, saying the issue cannot be solved on road or in the media. The issue must be left to Darul Uloom Deoband’s Majlis-e-Shoora to decide and media statements by the concerned people must stop immediately, appealed AIMMM here today.

The flood of statements in the media and protests by Deoband students following the interview of Maulana Vastanvi have brought disrepute to the Islamic seminary of global fame and repute, AIMMM leaders said in a statement on 28th Jan. 2011 here in New Delhi.

Newly elected rector of Deoband Maulana Vastanvi last week told Times of India and TwoCircles.net that all is well in Gujarat of Narendra Modi, and that Muslims should leave Gujarat riots behind and move ahead. It was seen, not unjustifiably, as an indirect praise of Modi who has been dragged to court for the 2002 riots that left hundreds of innocent Muslims dead. The victims are yet to get justice as they are yet to be rehabilitated fully and culprits yet to be punished.

Surprisingly, Mushawarat has neither condemned nor endorsed the controversial interview of Surat-based cleric Vastanvi.

The AIMMM leaders said that the way issue has been dragged in the media has not just damaged the prestige of the seminary but sullied the “religious and milli image of the community.” The issue should have been solved through dialogues among the responsible people. They urged immediate media debate on the issue as it has reached the Shoora.

“Now that the Shoora has been called to settle the dispute erupted after Vastanvi’s statement, people must immediately stop issuing media statements on the issue. The issue should be completely handed over to the esteemed Shoora. In principle the Shoora is empowered to take any decision in this regard. The issue cannot be solved on road or on the pages of yellow journalism. We strongly condemn the trend and appeal to the millat to resolve their issues through peaceful and democratic means,” they said.

Signatories to the Mushawarat statement are: Dr Zafarul Islam Khan, acting president, AIMMM, Mujtaba Farooque, secretary, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Maulana Abdul Wahab Khilji, president, All India Islahi Movement and former secretary general of Jamiat Ahle Hadees, Dr SQR Ilyas, member, executive committee, All India Muslim Personal Law Board and Dr Tasleem Rahmani, president, Muslim Political Council of India.
