Udaya Bhaskar is the BJP candidate in Palakkad Assembly constituency. Sarees were distributed at the Pirayiri village Panchayat and the Kannadi Higher Secondary School on March 5 and 6, respectively. In the Pirayiri Panchayat, the distribution was at a programme organized by the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP) in which Udaya Bhaskar was also present, according to reports. Whereas, Udaya Bhaskar was not present at the distribution of sarees arranged at the Kannadi Higher Secondary School reportedly by the SNDP Youth Movement and another organisation. However, the programme was interrupted by the members of the DYFI and the CPI (M) when they came to know about it.

BJP state president V Muraleedharan had earlier said that there was no need to keep away Mr Udaya Bhaskar just because he was allegedly involved in the saree controversy. He added that the CPI (M) was using it for political gains. The BJP would face the election keeping together community and backward class organizations. The party was holding talks with different community organizations. The party has not announced candidates in several reservation constituencies, as part of reaching an agreement with backward caste organizations.

BJP’s Mahila Morcha leader Shobha Surendran earlier said that the party would win 12 seats in the Kerala Assembly in the present elections.

BJP leader and former Minister of State for Railways in the NDA government Mr O Rajagopal is contesting from the Nemam constituency in Thiruvananthapuram. Former state president CK Padmanabhan is contesting from Kundamangalam in Kozhikode. Other important contestants are AN Radhakrishnan (Kaypamangalam), K Surendran (Manjeswaram), PK Krishna Das (Kattakkada) and KP Sreeshan (Beypore).

Even though the RSS has many units in Kerala, the BJP has not yet been able to open its account in the Kerala Assembly. Despite being a weak party, the BJP was further weakened by rivalry between the leaders and factionalism. However, the party could mark its presence in the recently-held Panchayat elections by winning a few seats.
