India welcomes North-South Korean meeting

New Delhi : India has welcomed the decision of North and South Korea to hold summit-level meeting later this month.

Welcoming the decision, an External Affairs Ministry spokesman expressed the hope that it would contribute to efforts to usher in peace and stability there.

The South Korean President, Roh Moo-Hyun and North Korean leader Kim Jong Il are to meet in Pyongyang from 28-30 this month.

Pointing out that India supports all efforts for peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula, the spokesman said New Delhi hope that the summit meeting in Pyongyang will further contribute in a positive way to this objective.

North and South Korea announced earlier in the day that their leaders will hold their summit-level meeting. This will be second such meeting since 2000 which led to unprecedented reconciliation between the two countries.
